Zhu Hong

In Singapore, Zhu Hong is the only artist who records the local streets and lanes with a unique non-linear line of Fauvism and bright oil paints.

Zhu Hong was once an architect and a self-taught artist after he came to Singapore in the 1990s. His painting style is special from others, with little toning. He often squeezes the oil on the canvas directly and then paints it with a brush, sometimes simply with his hands. It is a way close to the radical expression of Fauvism, not realistic, not three-dimensional, and not following the rules of perspectives. The composition is flat and boldly distorted and deformed, but the overall visual effect is not that exaggerated, and it is still orderly and reasonable. His dissection and reconstruction of building structures benefited from his early professional training as an architect. He is familiar with architecture and has visual penetration. Without establishing a normal perspective, he filters the relationship between the building itself and the surrounding environment. Often, he will draw quickly, and rarely starts with charcoal. Once he has established the picture and composition in his mind, he immediately decides to wave his brushstrokes, wherever he goes, he is very agile and energetic. At the same time, since the process of toning is done directly on the canvas, the colors of the picture are pure and straightforward, full of appeal and texture.

Picasso once said that he has been learning how to do a painting from children all his life, so when you see Zhu Hong’s works, you know that if Picasso is alive, he will give Zhu Hong a big thumbs up.

Zhu Hong’s mobile phone paintings also inherited the established style of his oil paintings and added an extra childishness.
