Choy Weng Yang

Choy Weng Yang was born in 1936, Singapore. He is a prominent artist, curator, art writer and educator. As one of Singapore’s second-generation artists, Choy’s works are known for the abstract elements as well as a focus on colours. His interest in the subject has been ongoing ever since his early works in the 1960s. Choy’s early works consist of arrangements of colours, showcasing a unique visual impact through the bands of hues that he believes each holds their own quality. There were several distinct stages of his works, including impressionism, abstraction, colour interaction and abstract impressionism. Choy takes inspiration from famed artists such as Monet, Cezanne, Mondrian and Albers, all of which can be seen through his evolving range of works.

He has contributed immensely to the arts scene in Singapore through his practice as an artist, writings and publicationson art, as well as curating various exhibitions.

He was part of the pioneering team at the National Museum Art Gallery in the 1970s, first as Head of Exhibition and Design and later as Curator of Art.
