Yeo Hoe Koon

Yeo Hoe Koon (杨可均), born in 1935 in Hainan, China, moved to Singapore as a young boy and later became one of the country’s most respected second-generation artists. He trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in the mid-1950s before heading to Paris to study at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. From 1965 to 1968, Yeo embarked on an extended art tour across Europe, an experience that broadened his creative vision and deepened his artistic voice.

Back in Singapore, Yeo combined a career in art education with an unwavering dedication to painting. Over the decades, he developed a style that merges Eastern sensitivity with Western abstraction, creating works that balance lyrical brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and a quiet, contemplative energy. His oil, acrylic, and ink paintings are recognised for their sense of movement and poetry, offering viewers an intimate yet expansive experience.

Yeo has held more than 30 solo exhibitions and taken part in over 80 group shows throughout Asia and Europe. His works are represented in major public and private collections, including the Singapore Art Museum, UOB, and DBS. Widely regarded as a bridge between traditions and modernity, Yeo Hoe Koon remains a vital figure in Singapore’s art history, admired for his lifelong commitment to artistic exploration.

Yeo Hoe Koon paints between worlds — where East meets West, where colour breathes poetry, and where abstraction holds the soul of tradition.

The Timeless Brush of Yeo Hoe Koon

Background and Artistic Journey

Born in 1935 in Hainan, China, and later settling in Singapore, Yeo Hoe Koon is widely recognised as one of Singapore’s pioneering second generation artists. After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Yeo furthered his studies at the renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he immersed himself in the world of European modernism.

This journey between cultures has shaped Yeo’s unique artistic voice. His works reflect a refined blend of Eastern and Western influences, expressed with sensitivity, confidence, and a deep understanding of both traditions. Over the years, his work has been featured in major exhibitions both in Singapore and internationally, and he is respected as a master whose contributions have played an important role in shaping Singapore’s modern art landscape.

Artistic Style and Medium

Yeo Hoe Koon’s work is known for its lyrical abstraction, expressive brushwork, and the poetic interplay of colour and light. Working in oil, acrylic, and Chinese ink, Yeo creates emotionally rich and visually rhythmic paintings that transcend cultural and stylistic boundaries.

While his early pieces draw from classical techniques, his later works are boldly abstract, revealing a freedom and spontaneity that speak to his maturity as an artist. Natural elements such as wind, mist, water, and light are common themes in his paintings, brought to life through dynamic compositions that exude movement and vitality.

His ability to merge the traditions of Chinese ink painting with the expressive energy of Western abstraction has resulted in a body of work that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Major Exhibitions

Yeo’s work has been widely exhibited in both solo and group shows. A major retrospective at NAFA in 2022, titled Illumination, showcased more than 30 new oil paintings, including an impressive four metre long triptych. The exhibition celebrated his lifelong dedication to the arts and highlighted the freshness and vitality that continue to define his practice.
