Tong Chin Sye

Tong Chin Sye, born in Singapore in 1939, is a second-generation Nanyang-style artist and one of the nation’s most celebrated multi-media painters. Trained in both Western and Chinese art traditions, he graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and later returned as a part-time lecturer in Western Art. His artistic practice spans watercolour, oil, Chinese ink, calligraphy, and mixed media, showcasing his remarkable versatility and technical mastery.

In 1987, Tong won First Prize in the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) Open Art Competition, a milestone that affirmed his growing prominence. In 1998, he proudly represented Singapore at the Flemish Watercolour Days in Belgium. A passionate traveller at heart, he journeyed across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and beyond, each trip enriching his art with textured depictions of street scenes, landscapes, and cultural vignettes brought to life through vibrant colours and lyrical lines.

Tong’s paintings are defined by sketch-based compositions, often created on the spot without reliance on photographs. His brushwork carries the fluidity of Chinese calligraphy, while his palette combines keen observation with personal memory. As an educator, he has led countless workshops and contributed widely to the local art community, including guest talks and live demonstrations at the Singapore Art Museum, cementing his legacy as both an artist and a mentor.

From the streets of distant lands to the heart of Singapore, Tong Chin Sye captures life in motion — spontaneous, lyrical, and deeply human.
