Nathalie Laoué

Nathalie Laoué is a French contemporary artist based in Singapore whose vibrant and tactile paintings celebrate the visual richness of the city-state’s cultural heritage. Born near Cognac in France, she began her artistic journey after moving to Singapore in 2002. Although self-taught, her early training in physical measurement and industrial design contributes to her distinctive sense of structure, form, and material engagement in her artworks.
Laoué’s work draws deeply from her experiences living amidst Singapore’s dynamic urban landscapes and diverse cultural textures. Her artistic approach blends intense colour, intricate patterns, and layered textures, reflecting the visual language of the city she calls home. Inspired by the flora and fauna, architectural motifs, and vibrant societal intersections surrounding her daily life, she seeks to create works that embody both aesthetic beauty and cultural dialogue.
A signature feature of Laoué’s practice is her use of mixed media and relief techniques to build richly textured surfaces. She often incorporates resin, inlaid mineral powders, pigments, and photographic elements alongside acrylic or oil paints, resulting in images with striking depth and tactile complexity. This method allows her compositions to transcend flatness, inviting viewers to experience the interaction between light, colour, and surface in a more visceral way.

One of the central themes of Laoué’s recent work is Singapore’s architectural heritage, particularly its iconic shophouses. Through collections that celebrate shophouse façades, ceramic motifs, and decorative patterning, she highlights the visual interplay of history, community, and design. By capturing the ornate details and living essence of these heritage structures, she negotiates a dialogue between tradition and modern identity in Singapore’s built environment.

Laoué’s art embodies a visual language of cultural celebration and exchange, rooted in her love for Singapore’s diversity.
