Choo Keng Kwang 朱庆光

Choo Keng Kwang (b. 1931-2019), born in Singapore, holds a prominent position in the art community due to his expertise in traditional paintings. As one of the most eminent and beloved first-generation artists in Singapore, he is widely recognized for his exceptional talent. Choo’s renowned includes his oil paintings of doves as symbols of peace and his enormously popular Chinatown scenes. Over time, he became renowned for his ability to skillfully blend Western impressionism and the principles of perspective with the traditional Chinese brushwork, establishing himself as a distinguished painter.

Choo was groomed by his father who instructed him in calligraphy. He graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1953 and began his career as a teacher where he later became the principal of Sin Hua School and head of the art education department at Nafa. In 1976, Choo Keng Kwang was honored with the Public Service Medal (PBM) by the late President Benjamin Sheares in recognition of his significant contributions to the art field. Five years later, in 1981, he received the Community Award from the Bundaberg Art Society in Australia. In 1983, he was bestowed with the Special Award at the National Day Art Exhibition. Choo’s dedication to art was further acknowledged in 1986 when he was presented with the Voluntary Service Medal for his contributions to the Singapore ART ’85 – 50th Anniversary, as well as the Society of Chinese Artists Award and the Long Service Award (PBS) for his contributions to education. In 1989, he was chosen as a featured artist for the esteemed Outstanding Singapore Artists Exhibition series, organized by the Ministry of Community Development.

Choo Keng Kwang has held and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, and the United States. His artworks have garnered significant attention and achieved remarkable success in auctions conducted by renowned auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where they were sold at record-breaking prices. Notably, Choo’s paintings have been acquired by prominent individuals including Neil Armstrong, the astronaut known for being the first person to land on the moon, Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, the late President Ong Teng Cheong, as well as prestigious establishments like the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the Shangri-la Hotel.

 

朱庆光先生生于1931年,一名土生土长的资深画家朱庆光先生,从殖民地到独立之建国时代,风云的经历,社会生活的体验,一步一脚印,长期的实践中研磨出深厚扎实的写实功力。画家年轻时在乡村从事教育工作,生活纯朴,热爱大自然,他画作的体裁取自现实生活和自然景观,农村里的生活景物,花草、树木、小鸡、小狗、游鱼、走兽、尤其 是鸽子,是他的代表作, 他为捕捉鸽子的各种神态,还特地做了一个大笼子,养了十多只鸽子,画出一幅幅和谐精美栩栩如生的鸽子。

 

朱先生的绘画风格有南洋热带风土民情。作品中融合油画的光色结构,展现浪漫情怀有充满安详意境,给观者一份温暖亲切的感觉,更具特色的是他五六十年代老街市集,如:牛车水、潮州街、结霜桥等,反映出当时的精神面貌,记录了一个时代的变迁,给后代留下了历史篇章,70年代邮政局也采用了四幅牛车水作品作首日封和邮票以作纪念。
