Chieu Shuey Fook

Chieu Shuey Fook was born in Singapore in 1934. Pioneer artist and instructor Cheong Soo Pieng influenced Chieu, a NAFA alumnus and second-generation artist. In 1953, Chieu obtained his Diploma in Western Painting. He had a successful 20-year career in advertising until becoming a full-time artist in 1983. This had a lasting impact on his artistic undertakings, particularly his metal relief pieces, for which he is most known today. Chieu has employed base metals such as zinc, aluminum, and copper, as well as a variety of chemicals, self-derived mixtures of solutions, and material combinations in his work, in search of new techniques.
His painting “Demon Fish” got two Citation Awards in New York, USA, after that. ITT Corporation also employed the “Demon Fish” in their global advertising campaigns. He was awarded First Prize in the Abstract Painting Category by the NAFA Alumni Association (2009) and the Singapore Art Society (2009). (2013). Among his significant art commission works were metal relief murals for a fleet of 20 Singapore Airlines Boeing 747s, a copper enamel mural at NOL (1983), a copper enamel frieze for Orchard MRT Station (1987), and 20 metal relief works for the APEC Summit (2009). In 1989, the Singapore Community Chest commissioned him to create a Coin Global Sculpture, and Singapore Auto Engineering commissioned him to create a multi-colored design for a charity campaign on an automobile (1990).
