Ong Kim Seng

Ong Kim Seng (b. 1945, Singapore) is one of Asia’s most beloved and celebrated watercolourists, admired for his lifelong dedication to art and the gentle beauty of his work. Since becoming a full time artist in 1985, Ong has poured his heart into painting, earning Singapore’s highest artistic honour, the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts, in 1990. That same year, he made history as the first Asian outside the US to join the prestigious American Watercolor Society (AWS), and in 2000 he was awarded its distinguished Dolphin Fellowship after winning nine AWS awards in New York.
Ong’s paintings are cherished for their fluid, graceful brushstrokes and the way they capture light, colour and mood with such ease. From charming shophouses to faraway landscapes, his works tell quiet stories of places and moments, and have been shown in museums and galleries around the world, including the Singapore Art Museum and the Agung Rai and Neka Museums in Bali. His art has touched the hearts of collectors everywhere, from Queen Elizabeth II to the Prime Ministers of China, Japan and India, and even the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Alongside his own practice, Ong has been a passionate advocate for watercolour art, sharing his knowledge and inspiring countless artists. He served as President of the Singapore Watercolour Society from 1991 to 2001 and continues as its Honorary President, while advising the National Arts Council since 1998. Today, as a respected mentor and even Chief Judge at international watercolour exhibitions, Ong’s legacy is not only in his paintings but in the warmth and inspiration he brings to the global art community.

Through the fluid grace of watercolour, Ong Kim Seng preserves fleeting moments and timeless places — his brush a quiet witness to beauty, light, and memory.
